Réhydratation refers to the process of restoring adequate fluid and electrolyte balance in the body when it has been depleted due to dehydration. Dehydration can occur from various causes, including excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or insufficient fluid intake. The body loses not only water but also essential electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride.

The primary goal of rehydration is to replace these lost fluids and electrolytes to restore normal bodily functions. Mild to moderate dehydration can often be managed at home with oral rehydration solutions (ORS). These solutions are specifically formulated to contain the right balance of water, salts, and sugars, which facilitates efficient absorption in the intestines. Drinking plain water alone may not be sufficient, as it doesn't adequately replace lost electrolytes.

In more severe cases of dehydration, or when oral intake is not possible due to persistent vomiting, intravenous (IV) rehydration may be necessary. This involves administering fluids directly into a vein, allowing for rapid and controlled replenishment of fluids and electrolytes. Medical professionals monitor the patient closely during IV rehydration to ensure proper fluid balance is restored.

Symptoms of dehydration include thirst, dry mouth, reduced urination, fatigue, dizziness, and in severe cases, confusion or loss of consciousness. Prompt rehydration is crucial to prevent complications such as heatstroke, kidney problems, and shock. Preventing dehydration through adequate fluid intake, especially during hot weather or strenuous activity, is always the best approach.
