Püsivakult, also known as persistent cult, refers to a type of group that exhibits characteristics of a cult but demonstrates a remarkable resilience and longevity over time. Unlike smaller, more ephemeral cults that may dissolve after a few years or the departure of a charismatic leader, püsivakults can endure for decades, maintaining their core beliefs and social structures despite significant societal changes, internal conflicts, or external pressures.

The persistence of these groups often stems from a combination of factors. Strong ideological frameworks, often centered around a unique worldview or a set of prophecies, provide a stable foundation. The development of intricate organizational structures, including established leadership roles, recruitment strategies, and internal mechanisms for member control, further reinforces their stability. Members often exhibit high levels of commitment, fostered through intensive indoctrination, social isolation from outside influences, and a sense of shared purpose or destiny.

Püsivakults may also adapt to changing circumstances, allowing them to survive. This adaptation can involve modifying recruitment tactics, subtly altering doctrines to align with current societal trends, or engaging in legitimate businesses to ensure financial stability. The departure or death of an initial leader does not necessarily spell the end for a püsivakult, as succession plans or established institutional authority can ensure continuity. While the term "püsivakult" highlights longevity, it does not inherently imply an increase or decrease in the harmful aspects typically associated with cults; these can persist or evolve alongside the group itself.
