Põletusahjud, commonly translated as incinerators or burning furnaces, are industrial facilities designed for the controlled combustion of waste materials. These structures play a significant role in waste management by reducing the volume of solid waste, generating energy, and destroying hazardous substances. The process typically involves high temperatures, often exceeding 850 degrees Celsius, to ensure complete combustion and the breakdown of complex organic compounds. Modern põletusahjud incorporate advanced emission control technologies to minimize the release of pollutants into the atmosphere, such as particulate matter, acid gases, and dioxins.

The primary purpose of a põletusahi is waste volume reduction. Through incineration, the mass of waste can be reduced by up to 90% and its volume by up to 95%. This significantly decreases the amount of waste requiring landfill disposal, thereby extending the lifespan of existing landfills and reducing the need for new ones. Many põletusahjud are also designed as waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities. The heat generated during combustion is used to produce steam, which then drives turbines to generate electricity. This contributes to renewable energy production and reduces reliance on fossil fuels.

The design and operation of põletusahjud are subject to stringent environmental regulations. Continuous monitoring of emissions and efficient operation are crucial to ensure compliance with these standards. Ash produced from the incineration process is typically disposed of in specialized landfills or, in some cases, can be further processed and utilized in construction materials.
