Põieärritus, also known as bladder irritation, refers to a set of symptoms that indicate inflammation or overactivity of the bladder. These symptoms can include a frequent urge to urinate, a sudden and strong need to go, pain or burning during urination, and the passage of small amounts of urine frequently. In some cases, individuals may also experience nocturia, which is waking up multiple times during the night to urinate, and even incontinence, or involuntary leakage of urine.

Several factors can contribute to bladder irritation. Infections, particularly urinary tract infections (UTIs), are a common cause, as bacteria can inflame the bladder lining. Other medical conditions such as interstitial cystitis, a chronic bladder condition of unknown cause, can also lead to persistent irritation. Certain medications, particularly diuretics, can increase urine production and frequency, potentially causing irritation. Lifestyle factors like consuming bladder irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and artificial sweeteners can also trigger or worsen symptoms in sensitive individuals. Furthermore, conditions affecting the pelvic floor muscles or nerves that control bladder function can contribute to bladder irritation.

Diagnosis of bladder irritation typically involves a review of symptoms, a physical examination, and potentially urine tests to check for infection. Further investigations like bladder imaging or cystoscopy may be employed to rule out other underlying causes or to assess the bladder lining directly. Treatment strategies vary depending on the identified cause and can include antibiotics for infections, dietary modifications to avoid irritants, medication to relax the bladder muscle, and physical therapy for pelvic floor issues. Managing stress and practicing good hydration habits can also be beneficial.
