Päästöjenpoisto, also known as carbon dioxide removal (CDR), refers to the process of removing carbon dioxide from the Earth's atmosphere. This is distinct from emission reduction, which aims to decrease the amount of greenhouse gases being released. Päästöjenpoisto technologies and methods are being explored and developed as a potential strategy to mitigate climate change by actively lowering the concentration of CO2 already present in the atmosphere.

There are various approaches to päästöjenpoisto, broadly categorized into natural and technological methods. Natural methods include afforestation and reforestation, which involve planting new trees or restoring forests, as these trees absorb CO2 through photosynthesis. Soil carbon sequestration, which enhances the capacity of soils to store carbon, is another natural approach. Technological methods encompass direct air capture (DAC), where machines chemically extract CO2 from the air, and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), which involves burning biomass for energy and then capturing and storing the resulting CO2 emissions. Enhanced weathering, a process that accelerates the natural breakdown of rocks to absorb CO2, is also considered a technological method.

While some methods are already in use, others are still in early stages of development.
