Pyörännopeusanturit, also known as wheel speed sensors, are electronic components that measure the rotational speed of a wheel. They are a critical part of modern vehicle safety and performance systems. These sensors typically utilize a magnetic or optical principle to detect the rotation of a toothed ring or a slotted disc attached to the wheel hub or axle. As the wheel rotates, the teeth or slots pass by the sensor, generating an electrical signal whose frequency is proportional to the wheel's speed.

The primary function of wheel speed sensors is to provide data to the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). By monitoring each wheel's speed, the ABS can detect if a wheel is locking up during braking. If a lock-up is detected, the system can momentarily reduce brake pressure to that wheel, allowing it to regain traction and preventing skidding. This significantly improves steering control and reduces stopping distances, especially on slippery surfaces.

Beyond ABS, wheel speed sensors are also integral to other vehicle systems. Traction control systems (TCS) use this data to prevent wheel spin during acceleration. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) systems also rely on wheel speed information, along with steering angle and yaw rate sensors, to detect and correct loss of control. In some vehicles, the data from wheel speed sensors is also used by the speedometer, odometer, and adaptive cruise control systems. The accuracy and reliability of these sensors are therefore paramount for the safe and efficient operation of many automotive functions.
