Pyörrepumput, also known as vortex pumps or regenerative turbine pumps, are a type of centrifugal pump characterized by their impeller design. Unlike conventional centrifugal pumps that have a single impeller stage for pumping, pyörrepumput utilize an impeller with radial vanes on both sides, operating within a special casing. This design allows the fluid to pass through the impeller multiple times, gaining energy in each pass.

The principle of operation involves fluid entering the pump casing and then being directed by the impeller vanes. As the impeller rotates, the fluid is accelerated and pushed outwards, but instead of exiting the pump immediately, it is guided back towards the impeller's eye. This recycling of the fluid through the impeller allows it to achieve higher heads (pressure) than a single-stage centrifugal pump of similar size and speed.

Pyörrepumput are well-suited for applications requiring high heads and relatively low flow rates. They are often used in systems where a significant pressure increase is needed, but the volume of fluid being moved is not exceptionally large. Examples of their use include boiler feed applications, water supply systems for buildings, and in certain chemical processing industries. Their robust construction and ability to handle clean or slightly contaminated fluids make them a versatile choice for specific pumping tasks. However, they are generally not recommended for pumping slurries or fluids with large solids due to the potential for wear and clogging.
