Pyykinpesu is the process of cleaning laundry, including clothes, bedding, and towels, to remove dirt, stains, and odors. It can be performed by hand or with a washing machine in homes, laundries, or other facilities.

Before washing, items are sorted by color, fabric type, and care requirements. Pockets are emptied, buttons zipped, and garments turned inside out when necessary. Stains are pretreated.

Detergents used in pyykinpesu contain surfactants to lift soils and enzymes to break down organic stains. Liquid and powder detergents have different dosing and may include optical brighteners or fragrances. Washing can be done in a machine or by hand. In a machine, programs vary by fabric type (cotton, synthetics, delicates, wool) and by soil level. Temperatures range from cold to hot; lower temperatures save energy. Spin speed affects moisture removal from the drum.

After washing, textiles are dried by tumble drying or air drying. Delicate items may require low heat or line drying. Ironing and finishing depend on fabric and care labels.
