In practice, pystysuorastaminen refers to correcting perspective distortions so that vertical lines appear perpendicular to the ground plane in the final representation.

In image processing and architectural photography, pystysuorastaminen typically involves estimating a projective transformation, or homography, that maps the original image to a rectified view where vertical lines are straight and parallel. The method often begins with detecting vertical features or lines using edge detection and line detectors such as the Hough transform, followed by computing a transformation that minimizes deviation of these lines from true verticals. The image is then warped accordingly, with optional cropping and scaling to preserve composition.
