Pupillatágítás, often referred to as mydriasis, is the dilation of the pupil, the opening in the center of the iris that controls the amount of light entering the eye. This dilation can occur naturally or be induced. Naturally, the pupil widens in low light conditions to allow more light to reach the retina, enabling better vision in dim environments. Conversely, in bright light, the pupil constricts (miosis) to limit light entry and protect the retina.

Medical professionals induce pupillatágítás for several reasons, primarily during eye examinations. Dilating drops, typically containing mydriatic medications like tropicamide or phenylephrine, are applied to the eye. These drops relax the iris sphincter muscle and/or stimulate the iris dilator muscle, causing the pupil to enlarge. This dilation allows for a more thorough examination of the internal structures of the eye, including the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels, which is crucial for detecting various eye diseases and conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy.

Beyond diagnostic purposes, pupillatágítás can also be used therapeutically. For instance, it may be employed to relieve pain associated with certain inflammatory eye conditions like iritis or uveitis by preventing the iris from adhering to the lens. In some surgical procedures, pupil dilation is necessary to provide adequate access and visualization. The effects of dilating drops are temporary, with pupil size typically returning to normal within a few hours to a day, although this can vary depending on the specific medication used. During the period of dilation, individuals may experience temporary light sensitivity and blurred near vision.
