In Finnish usage the term typically refers to fire brigade pump wagons that could be deployed to fight fires away from fixed hydrants or to assist in other water transfer tasks required by rail operations.

Design and equipment commonly include a diesel- or electrically powered pump, a water or foam reservoir, and hoses for suction and discharge. They are built on standard freight wagon frames and are paired with fittings, valves, and tool storage to enable rapid deployment. Some variants also carried portable pumps, small crane or hoisting gear for maintenance, and basic firefighting or pumping accessories to support operations in challenging locations.

Operation and role: pumppuvaunut are designed to be hauled by a locomotive to the scene, where the onboard pump can be connected to available water sources or to onboard tanks to supply water or fire suppressants. They have been used to support railway fire brigades, in industrial settings adjacent to railways, and in situations where fixed water supplies are unavailable or impractical to access quickly.

Historical context and status: pumppuvaunut were more common in the early to mid-20th century when railway firefighting relied heavily on mobile pumping capacity. With modernization of firefighting equipment and rail infrastructure, their use has declined, and many examples have been retired or preserved for historical purposes.
