A pumping system is an arrangement that moves fluids by converting mechanical energy into hydraulic energy. It typically includes a pump driven by a prime mover, inlet and outlet piping, valves, fittings, and controls. The purpose is to deliver a specified flow at a defined pressure while overcoming system head and friction losses in applications such as water supply, wastewater, HVAC, irrigation, and process industries.

Common pump types include centrifugal pumps, which impart energy with a rotating impeller, and positive displacement pumps, which move a fixed volume per cycle. Submersible and inline configurations are used in various installations. Each type has characteristic duty points, efficiency profiles, and suitability for different fluids, viscosities, and temperatures.

Key design concepts are the system curve, which describes how head increases with flow, and the pump curve, which shows pump head versus flow. The duty point is where the curves intersect. Operators may use multiple pumps in parallel to increase flow or in series to raise head, and variable speed drives adjust performance for changing demand.

Important considerations include fluid properties (chemical compatibility, abrasiveness, temperature), suction conditions and Net Positive Suction Head required (NPSHr), material selection, seals and bearings, and energy efficiency. Installation should minimize vibration and leaks and ensure adequate cooling and ventilation for the motor.

Maintenance focuses on preserving seal integrity, bearing condition, impeller wear, lubrication, and alignment. Regular monitoring of flow, pressure, vibrations, and motor current helps detect performance degradation. Standards and guidelines from industry bodies govern design, efficiency, and safety.
