Pumping station, also known as a pump station, is a facility that houses pumps and related equipment used to move liquids from a lower to a higher elevation or to maintain flow in a system. They are common in municipal water supply networks, wastewater and sewage systems, flood control, irrigation, and industrial processes. The specific design and arrangement depend on the fluid, required head, and reliability needs.

Pumping stations are categorized by function. Water-supply stations provide rising pressures and flow to distribution networks. Wastewater or lift stations move sewage through gravity-based sewer systems when gravity alone cannot do so. Irrigation and industrial stations boost flow for processes or agricultural use. In construction, stations may be underground with a wet well (a submerged sump) or dry-well configurations with the pump equipment installed above the ground.

Key components include pumps (often centrifugal), one or more motors or drivers (electrical, sometimes diesel), pipes for suction and discharge, valves, a control system, and a power supply. Many stations employ variable-frequency drives and SCADA for monitoring and automatic start/stop sequencing. Proper layout ensures access for maintenance, minimizes vibration, and allows safe isolation of equipment.

Design considerations include hydraulic head, flow rate, energy efficiency, redundancy (for example N+1), protection against corrosion, and resilience to power outages. Maintenance involves inspection, pump testing, valve servicing, and alignment checks.

Pumping stations enable reliable water delivery, wastewater conveyance, flood mitigation, and industrial productivity, and are a standard element of modern infrastructure.
