The publish-consume pattern, also known as the publish-subscribe pattern or pub/sub, is a messaging pattern where senders of messages, called publishers, do not directly send messages to specific receivers, called subscribers. Instead, publishers categorize messages into classes or types without knowledge of which subscribers, if any, exist. Similarly, subscribers express interest in one or more classes of messages and receive only the messages that are of interest, without knowledge of which publishers, if any, are sending them.

This decoupling is achieved through an intermediary, often referred to as a message broker or event bus. Publishers send messages to the broker, and subscribers register their interest in specific message types with the broker. The broker then filters and delivers messages from publishers to the relevant subscribers. This allows for asynchronous communication and a high degree of flexibility in system design.

Key benefits of the publish-consume pattern include loose coupling between components, scalability, and resilience. Publishers and subscribers can be added or removed independently without affecting each other, as long as they adhere to the agreed-upon message format and topic structure. This makes it suitable for event-driven architectures, microservices communication, and scenarios where multiple components need to react to the same events. Examples of technologies implementing this pattern include Kafka, RabbitMQ, and AWS SNS.
