A pseudohermaphrodite, also known as intersex, is an individual whose biological sex is not clearly defined as typically male or female. This condition arises from variations in chromosomes, hormones, or anatomy that lead to an atypical development of sex characteristics. The term "pseudohermaphrodite" is considered outdated and potentially offensive by many, with "intersex" being the preferred and more respectful terminology.

There are various types of intersex variations. Some individuals may have external genitalia that do not match their internal reproductive organs or chromosomal makeup. For example, a person might have ovaries but a phallus-like clitoris and male-typical external appearance. Conversely, someone might have testes but a uterus and female-typical external appearance. Chromosomal variations, such as XXY (Klinefelter syndrome) or XO (Turner syndrome), can also result in intersex traits, affecting hormonal development and physical characteristics.

Intersex is not a disease but a natural variation in human development. The degree to which intersex traits are noticeable can vary significantly. Some individuals may be unaware of their intersex status until puberty or even later in life, while others may have visible differences from birth. Medical interventions, including surgery and hormone therapy, are sometimes performed on intersex infants and children, often without their consent, to align their appearance with typical male or female norms. However, there is a growing movement advocating for the rights and autonomy of intersex individuals, emphasizing the importance of informed consent and avoiding unnecessary medical interventions.
