Prädikativen is a term used in German grammar to refer to predicatives, elements that complete the meaning of a verb phrase and describe subject, object, or role rather than the noun they accompany directly. They are most commonly associated with copular verbs such as sein, werden and bleiben, but can also appear with other verbs when describing identity, state, or function.

There are several forms of predicatives. The predicative adjective (Adjektivprädikativ) describes a subject or object after a linking verb, usually without inflection. For example: Er ist müde. Das Auto ist rot. In these cases the adjective remains in its base form. The predicative noun (Nominalprädikativ) names identity or role, as in Er ist Lehrer. Sie wurde Präsidentin. Pronouns can also function predicatively: Das ist er. Das sind wir.

Predicatives can also occur with verbs that assign a state or role to an object, not just the subject. For example: Man hielt ihn für einen Helden. Here the phrase für einen Helden functions as a predicative complement referring to the object. Another common construction is mit einem Prädikativum nach Verben des Wandelns oder Machens, wie Er wurde Präsident oder Sie machte ihn zum Präsidenten.

In contrast to attributive adjectives, which modify a noun inside a noun phrase, predicatives provide information about the referent via a verb and its complements. They can express qualities (müde), identity or profession (Lehrer), or role (Präsident). The term Prädikativ/-Prädikativum is a key concept in German syntax for describing these non-nominal complements.
