Przepuklina, often referred to as a hernia, is a medical condition where an organ or fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot in a surrounding muscle or connective tissue wall called fascia. This protrusion can occur in various parts of the body.

Common types of hernias include inguinal hernias, which occur in the groin area, and femoral hernias, also in the groin, though less common. Umbilical hernias are seen at the navel, and incisional hernias develop at the site of a previous surgical scar. Hiatal hernias involve the stomach pushing up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity.

The causes of hernias are often a combination of muscle weakness and strain. Factors that can contribute to muscle weakness include congenital defects, aging, and previous surgery. Straining can be caused by heavy lifting, chronic coughing, constipation, or obesity.

Symptoms vary depending on the type and severity of the hernia. Some hernias may cause no symptoms at all, while others can result in a visible bulge, pain, or discomfort, especially when straining. A significant concern is strangulation, where the blood supply to the protruding tissue is cut off, leading to severe pain and requiring immediate medical attention.

Diagnosis is typically made through a physical examination. In some cases, imaging tests like ultrasound or CT scans may be used. Treatment options range from watchful waiting for asymptomatic hernias to surgical repair to push the tissue back into place and strengthen the weakened wall. Surgery is often recommended to prevent complications.
