protoscoleces
Protoscolex (plural protoscolices) is a larval form of certain cestodes (tapeworms) that arises within the metacestode stage of the parasite’s life cycle. It is most commonly described in hydatid cysts of Echinococcus species and in cysticerci of Taenia species. The protoscolex is typically invaginated inside the cyst and, in many species, bears a scolex-like structure equipped with suckers and, in some cases, a rostellum with hooks.
Morphology and development vary by genus, but the common feature is that the protoscolex represents a miniature

Clinical relevance: The identification of protoscolices within a cyst indicates potential fertility and capacity for propagation.
