Proton pump inhibitors, commonly referred to as PPIs, are a class of medications used to reduce the production of stomach acid. They work by inhibiting the proton pump, an enzyme in the stomach that produces acid. PPIs are primarily used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. They are also commonly prescribed for the prevention of stomach ulcers in people who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or who have had gastric bypass surgery.

PPIs are available in various forms, including tablets, capsules, and liquid suspensions. They are typically taken once or twice daily, depending on the specific medication and the condition being treated. Commonly prescribed PPIs include omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole, and esomeprazole.

While PPIs are generally effective and well-tolerated, they can have side effects, including headache, diarrhea, and an increased risk of bone fractures due to their effect on vitamin B12 absorption. Long-term use of PPIs has also been associated with an increased risk of pneumonia and Clostridium difficile infection. As a result, PPIs should be used judiciously and for the shortest duration necessary to achieve the desired therapeutic effect.

PPIs are not recommended for the treatment of acute gastritis or for the prevention of stress ulcers in hospitalized patients, as they do not provide any benefit over placebo in these settings. Additionally, PPIs should not be used to treat symptoms of acid reflux, as they do not address the underlying cause of the condition. Instead, lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding trigger foods and maintaining a healthy weight, are typically recommended for the management of acid reflux.
