Prosessområdet is a concept used in process management and organizational governance. It denotes a cohesive grouping of related processes that collectively achieve a defined objective or capability within an organization. Each prosessområdet has a defined scope, boundaries, and interfaces with other areas, a designated process owner, and a standardized set of practices and guidelines.

Typically, a prosessområdet describes its purpose, the processes it contains, the required inputs and expected outputs, the roles involved, and the resources and tools needed. It also specifies performance measures, success criteria, and compliance requirements, as well as the lifecycle activities such as planning, execution, monitoring, and improvement.

Many process-management frameworks use the concept of prosessområden to structure an organization’s process landscape. In CMMI, for example, a process area is a cluster of related practices that, when implemented, improve capability. In ISO-based quality systems, the process approach uses similarly bounded areas focused on value delivery and customer outcomes. Common examples include requirements management, project planning, configuration management, and quality assurance.

Implementing a prosessområde involves designating a process owner (processägare), documenting processes and interfaces, establishing metrics, and instituting reviews and continual improvement. The approach supports governance, accountability, interoperability between areas, and alignment with strategic objectives. In practice, prosessområden are mapped to value streams or organizational units to facilitate communication and performance management.
