Propanoni is a term that appears in different linguistic or contextual usages rather than as a distinct chemical entity in standard English-language chemistry. In many cases it is encountered as the plural form of propanone in languages such as Italian, where propanone is the IUPAC name for acetone.

Propanone, more commonly known as acetone, is the simplest ketone, with the chemical formula CH3-CO-CH3. It is a colorless, volatile liquid that is miscible with water and many organic solvents. It has a boiling point of 56.2 degrees Celsius and is widely used as a solvent in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and polymer manufacturing, as well as a cleaning agent and an intermediate in chemical synthesis. It is also a common component in nail polish removers.

Production and handling: Acetone is produced primarily through the cumene process, where cumene hydroperoxide cleavage yields phenol and acetone. It can also be produced by the dehydrogenation of isopropanol. It is highly flammable and should be stored away from sources of ignition; vapors can form explosive mixtures with air. Exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, and prolonged or high-level exposure should be avoided.

In other linguistic contexts, propanoni may be encountered as a misnomer, misspelling, or nonstandard usage for propanone. There is no widely recognized separate chemical entity officially named “propanoni” in current nomenclature.
