Product groups are typically defined to support strategic objectives. This classification enables targeted positioning, promotional planning, and stock control.

Effective management includes establishing clear criteria for inclusion, monitoring performance by group, and periodically rationalizing the portfolio to avoid cannibalization or overlap. Key metrics often tracked at the group level include sales, gross margin, inventory turnover, and days of supply.

Product groups are distinct from product lines and individual SKUs. A product line is a set of related products, while a product group is a higher-level categorization that can contain multiple lines and many SKUs. In inventory and e-commerce systems, product groups facilitate reporting, pricing rules, and catalog organization.
