Product form refers to a representation in which a complex quantity can be written as a product of simpler factors. This factorization often reflects a modular or independent structure among components, making analysis more tractable. The term is used in several fields, with the exact meaning depending on context.

In probability theory, a joint distribution has a product form if it factors into the product of marginal distributions. For a random vector X1, X2, ..., Xn, this means P(X1=x1, ..., Xn=xn) = ∏i P(Xi=xi). In the continuous case, the joint density factors as p(x1, ..., xn) = ∏i pi(xi). Product-form models typically rely on some form of independence or conditional independence between components, which greatly simplifies computation of probabilities, expectations, and other quantities.

In queueing theory and related stochastic networks, a product-form solution means that the steady-state distribution over the network state factors into a product of terms associated with individual nodes. Classical examples include Jackson’s open networks and Gordon–Newell networks, where under suitable assumptions (such as memoryless arrivals and service processes, and certain capacity conditions) the joint distribution can be written as a product of node-specific factors. This property enables exact, scalable performance analysis of large networks.

Applications of product form appear in telecommunications, manufacturing, reliability analysis, and other performance-modeling contexts. However, not every system exhibits a product form; the underlying structure must meet specific conditions. When a product form does not hold, researchers use approximation methods or simulation to study system behavior.
