Producesperm is a term occasionally used in scientific writing to denote the biological process by which male organisms generate sperm. The term is not widely used in mainstream biology, where spermatogenesis is preferred. When used, producesperm refers to the entire sequence by which germ cells in the male reproductive system develop into mature spermatozoa.

In mammals, producesperm occurs in the seminiferous tubules of the testes. It begins with spermatogonia, which divide by mitosis to renew the germ cell line. Some cells enter meiosis as primary spermatocytes, producing secondary spermatocytes and eventually haploid spermatids. Spermiogenesis reshapes these spermatids into elongated, motile spermatozoa. Mature spermatozoa are released into the lumen and transported through the epididymis, where they gain motility and fertilizing capability.

Timelines vary by species; in humans, the progression from spermatogonium to mature spermatozoon takes about 64 days, and production occurs continuously after puberty. Hormonal control is central: GnRH from the hypothalamus stimulates the pituitary to release FSH and LH. FSH acts on Sertoli cells to nurture developing germ cells, while LH stimulates Leydig cells to produce testosterone, which supports spermatogenesis. Temperature, nutrition, and health influence production.

Normal sperm production is essential for male fertility. Semen typically contains tens to hundreds of millions of sperm per milliliter. Disruptions in producesperm, or spermatogenesis, due to genetics, infections, endocrine disorders, or lifestyle factors, can lead to reduced fertility or infertility.
