The prioress is the head or superior of a priory or convent in many Western Christian monastic communities. The term comes from the Latin priorissa, the feminine form of prior, indicating a female counterpart to the male prior. A prioress may govern an independent priory or a house that is subordinate to a larger abbey; in autonomous houses the head is usually called an abbess, not a prioress.

Roles and duties of the prioress typically include spiritual leadership, governance of the community according to the relevant rule, and oversight of daily prayer and religious observances. She administers the priory’s property and finances, supervises domestic staff, and manages hospitality and charitable works. The prioress often oversees the formation of novices and the election or confirmation of local officers, while representing the house to higher church authorities.

Historically, the title was common across Benedictine, Cistercian, Augustinian, and other orders in medieval Europe. A priory might be a self-contained house or one dependent on a mother abbey, with the prioress exercising authority within the framework set by the abbey.
