Primitívek is the Hungarian term for "the primitives," historically used in anthropology and ethnology to designate peoples or cultures perceived as being at an early or simple stage of cultural development. The word derives from the Latin primitivus, via early modern European languages such as French primitif, and is incorporated into Hungarian with the plural form primitívek. In older scholarly and popular writings, the term was deployed as a descriptive label rather than a scientific assessment of individual societies.

Historically, primitívek were discussed within a framework of unilinear cultural evolution, which posited a linear progression from “primitive” to “civilized.” In such accounts, groups labeled as primitívek were often portrayed with ethnocentric assumptions, implying inferiority or simplicity and downplaying internal complexity, historical change, and cross-cultural contact. The term also reflected colonial-era attitudes that equated scientific progress with Western standards.

Modern scholarship generally rejects the term as outdated and misleading. It is viewed as a stigmatizing label that obscures diversity within groups and ignores the dynamic, context-specific nature of social, technological, and ecological development. Contemporary researchers prefer precise descriptions—referring to specific cultural practices, subsistence strategies (such as hunter-gatherer or agrarian), or the identity of particular communities—along with approaches grounded in cultural relativism and cross-cultural comparison.

Today, primitívek appears mainly in historical sources, critical discussions of colonial ethnography, or in debates about the vocabulary of anthropology. The term is regarded as an example of how nomenclature can reflect and reinforce ethnocentric assumptions rather than empirical reality.
