Preventaatio is the term used in Finnish public health and policy to describe actions aimed at preventing health problems, injuries, and other undesired outcomes before they occur, as well as reducing their consequences when they do arise. It covers medical, social, environmental, and organizational measures implemented at individual, community, and population levels to improve safety and well-being.

In health and safety, preventaatio is commonly organized into primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. Primary prevention aims to prevent the onset of disease or injury, for example through vaccination, health education, and environmental or policy measures. Secondary prevention focuses on early detection and intervention to halt the progression of a condition, such as screenings and routine checkups. Tertiary prevention seeks to reduce the harm or complications once a disease or injury has occurred, through rehabilitation and effective disease management.

Practically, preventaatio includes a wide range of actions: vaccination programs, lifestyle and behavioral interventions, routine screenings, safety regulations (like seat belts and workplace protections), environmental design that reduces risk, and preventive maintenance of machinery and infrastructure. It relies on both population-level strategies and individual-level interventions, and its success is assessed through outcomes such as reduced incidence and mortality, improved quality of life, and cost-effectiveness.

Challenges in preventaatio include ensuring equitable access, securing sustained funding, fostering adherence, addressing cultural and ethical considerations, and translating evidence into scalable policies.
