Preteklosti is a term used in linguistic theory to designate past time reference within a clause. It denotes events or states that occur before the reference moment, typically the time of speaking, but it may also be anchored to another past moment. The exact status of preteklosti varies across theories; it is commonly treated as a tense category, an aspectual category, or a combination of both (such as a past tense, a pluperfect, or a past perfect).

In many grammars, preteklosti is realized through verbal morphology, auxiliary constructions, or sentence-internal markers. Its expression can be synthetic, with inflected verb forms, or analytic, using auxiliary verbs and participles. The concept is often tied to the distinction between perfective and imperfective aspects: some languages use preteklosti to mark completed past actions, while others use it to contrast straightforward past events with ongoing or habitual past actions.
