Presentpartikeln, or the present participle, is a non-finite verb form used in several languages to express ongoing action, form complex verb constructs, or function as an adjective. It is especially prominent in English and Swedish grammar descriptions, but its functions and formation vary across languages.

In English, the present participle is usually formed by adding -ing to the verb stem (walk → walking, run → running). Spelling changes can occur, such as doubling consonants or dropping a final e (stop → stopping; make → making). The present participle serves multiple roles: it marks progressive aspect when used with forms of be (I am reading; they were walking), and it can introduce participial clauses that describe simultaneous or surrounding action (Walking down the street, she sang). It also appears as an adjective in noun phrases (a running river, the crying child). The form is closely related to the gerund, which shares the same -ing ending but functions as a noun rather than a verb.

In Swedish, presentpartikeln is formed with suffixes such as -ande or -ende, depending on the verb class (tala → pratande, läsa → läsande). It is mainly used as an adjective or in adverbial phrases, not to express ongoing aspect in the way English does. Examples include den pratande mannen (the talking man) or ett skrattande barn (a laughing child). Swedish typically expresses ongoing action with auxiliary constructions or the adverbial expression pågående, rather than a present participle as in English.

Cross-linguistically, the presence and use of a present participle differ: some languages have a distinct present participle with broad uses, others treat -ing forms as nouns (gerunds) or lack a present-participle category altogether.
