Presbyopia is a common age-related condition that affects the eyes' ability to focus on near objects. It is not a disease but rather a natural part of the aging process. As people age, the lens inside the eye, which is responsible for focusing light onto the retina, gradually loses its flexibility. This loss of elasticity, known as hardening of the lens, makes it more difficult for the eye to change focus from distant to near objects.

The primary symptom of presbyopia is a gradual blurring of vision when looking at close-up objects. This typically begins to occur in individuals around the age of 40 and progresses over time. People with presbyopia may find themselves holding reading material further away from their eyes to see clearly, or they may experience eye strain and headaches after reading or performing other close-up tasks. Difficulty seeing in dim light can also be exacerbated by presbyopia.

Presbyopia is diagnosed through a standard eye examination. Treatment options aim to compensate for the reduced focusing ability of the lens. These commonly include reading glasses, bifocal lenses, or progressive lenses, which provide correction for both near and distance vision. For individuals who prefer not to wear glasses, multifocal contact lenses are an option. Surgical interventions, such as corneal inlays or refractive lens exchange, are also available but are generally considered for specific cases.
