preribosome
A preribosome, or ribosome preribosome, is a transient assembly intermediate in the biogenesis of ribosomes. In eukaryotes, ribosome synthesis occurs primarily in the nucleolus and nucleus and preribosomes consist of ribosomal RNA precursors bound by ribosomal proteins and numerous assembly factors. They are not functional ribosomes and must undergo processing and maturation before they can participate in translation.
The early stages of preribosome formation involve the large 90S particle, sometimes referred to as the SSU
Within preribosomes, ribosomal RNA is processed and chemically modified with the help of small nucleolar RNAs
Mature preribosomes are eventually exported from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, where final maturation steps complete
In bacteria, ribosome assembly follows a different pathway and the term preribosome is generally not used,
