Preenvironment is a term used in environmental science and related disciplines to refer to the state of a system before a particular environment is established, recognized, or altered. There is no universally accepted definition, and the term appears in varied ways depending on context.

In ecology and restoration, preenvironmental conditions describe the original or prior state of an ecosystem before significant disturbance or before targeted restoration work begins. Such conditions serve as baselines or reference states against which changes are measured and restoration goals are set.

In environmental management and impact assessment, preenvironment or predevelopment baselines describe the conditions that existed before development or policy changes, including factors such as land cover, species presence, water quality, and climate variables. These baselines help quantify the extent of impact and guide mitigation or restoration planning.

In other fields, the term may appear less consistently and is often replaced by baseline environment or preexisting environment or by explicit descriptors of initial conditions in models and simulations. The lack of a standardized definition means that authors should specify what their preenvironment term encompasses, including spatial and temporal scope.
