PreMeiji refers to the historical period in Japan that preceded the Meiji Restoration. This era encompasses a long span of Japanese history, traditionally beginning with the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate in 1185 and ending with the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1868. During the preMeiji period, Japan was largely characterized by feudal rule, with power concentrated in the hands of military dictatorships known as shogunate.
