Pre-Ayutthaya refers to the historical period in Siam (modern-day Thailand) that predates the establishment of the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1351 CE. This era encompasses a long span of time, from early human settlements to the emergence of independent Tai states. Archaeological evidence suggests human habitation in the region dating back thousands of years, with various cultures leaving behind traces of their existence.

During the pre-Ayutthaya period, the territory of modern Thailand was influenced by several major civilizations and cultural spheres. Indian cultural and religious influences, particularly Hinduism and Buddhism, began to permeate the region from around the 1st century CE onwards, often arriving via trade routes. Various kingdoms and city-states rose and fell, with notable examples including the Dvaravati Kingdom, which flourished from the 6th to the 11th centuries, primarily in central Thailand and exhibiting strong Indianized Buddhist characteristics. Other significant polities include the Khmer Empire, which exerted considerable influence, particularly in the northeastern and central parts of the region, leaving behind impressive temple complexes such as Phimai and Phanom Rung.

The late pre-Ayutthaya period saw the increasing prominence of Tai peoples migrating southward. These Tai groups gradually established their own settlements and formed independent states. Historical chronicles and archaeological findings point to the existence of several Tai principalities in the north and central plains, such as Sukhothai and Lavo (Lopburi), which would later play crucial roles in the formation of Ayutthaya or become absorbed by it. The pre-Ayutthaya era was thus a complex tapestry of indigenous cultures, external influences, and the gradual consolidation of power leading to the conditions ripe for the founding of a unified Siamese kingdom.
