Potentiaatio is the Finnish term for potentiation, the phenomenon by which the effect of a substance or stimulus is enhanced beyond the sum of its individual effects. It can occur when two or more agents interact or when prior exposure primes a system to respond more strongly.

In pharmacology, potentiaatio describes drug interactions that amplify a response. It is commonly categorized into pharmacodynamic potentiation (the agents act on the same receptors or pathways, producing a greater effect) and pharmacokinetic potentiation (one drug modifies the absorption, distribution, metabolism, or excretion of another, increasing its exposure or effect). Mechanisms include enzyme inhibition leading to higher drug concentrations, transporter modulation, receptor sensitization, and amplification of signaling pathways.

In neuroscience, potentiation refers to increased synaptic efficacy, such as long-term potentiation (LTP), a persistent strengthening of synapses following high-frequency stimulation and a cellular mechanism underlying learning and memory. Potentiation can also arise in conditioning and other neural processes where prior activity enhances subsequent responses.

Implications of potentiaatio include potentially improved therapeutic effects, but also a higher risk of adverse effects and toxicity. Interactions vary with individual factors such as genetics, age, and organ function, making careful dosing, monitoring, and clinical evaluation essential in contexts where potentiation is possible.
