Postinfiltration refers to a processing step in which a second phase, species, or functional agent is introduced into a porous solid after an initial infiltration has occurred. The goal is to modify the material’s microstructure and properties by depositing or distributing the secondary constituent within the pre-existing pore network.

In practice, postinfiltration can take several forms. It may denote a deeper continuation of an infiltration process to achieve more uniform penetration into interconnected porosity, or it can describe a distinct post-treatment that deposits a second phase into the already infiltrated scaffold. Common approaches include solution-based infiltration, where a liquid precursor permeates the pores and固ifies, and vapor- or gas-phase infiltration, where volatile species infiltrate and react or condense inside the pores. Postinfiltration is often followed by drying, curing, or sintering to set the deposited phase and to stabilize the composite structure.

Applications of postinfiltration span various fields. In energy storage and conversion, it is used to create reinforced or conductive porous electrodes, solid electrolytes, or protective coatings within a scaffold. In catalysis, secondary phases are infiltrated to enhance active surface area or selectivity. In ceramics and composites, postinfiltration can improve mechanical strength, fracture toughness, or thermal properties while preserving porosity.

Key considerations include controlling the depth and uniformity of infiltration, interaction between the host and infiltrant, processing temperature and time, and potential pore blockage or stress development. Characterization typically involves microscopy, spectroscopy, porosimetry, and mechanical testing to evaluate distribution, composition, and performance.
