The postcentral gyrus is a prominent structure located in the parietal lobe of the human brain. It forms part of the somatosensory cortex, a region critical for processing sensory information from various parts of the body. Situated immediately posterior to the central sulcus—a deep groove that separates the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe—the postcentral gyrus plays a key role in sensory perception, particularly touch, temperature, pain, and proprioception (the sense of body position and movement).

Anatomically, the postcentral gyrus is characterized by its ridged appearance, consisting of tightly folded gray matter known as the primary somatosensory cortex. This region receives afferent (sensory) signals via the thalamus, which relays information from peripheral sensory receptors. The somatotopic organization of the postcentral gyrus means that different body parts are represented in specific, adjacent regions, forming a sensory homunculus—a distorted map where more sensitive areas (such as the hands and face) occupy larger portions of the cortex.

Damage to the postcentral gyrus can result in sensory deficits, including impaired touch discrimination, reduced pain sensitivity, or difficulties in proprioception. Conditions such as strokes or traumatic brain injuries affecting this area may lead to symptoms like numbness, tingling, or an inability to localize tactile stimuli. Clinically, neurological assessments often evaluate sensory function by testing responses to stimuli applied to different body regions, helping to identify potential lesions or dysfunctions in the postcentral gyrus.

The postcentral gyrus is also interconnected with other brain regions, including the thalamus, basal ganglia, and motor cortex, facilitating complex sensory-motor integration. Research continues to explore its role in higher-order sensory processing, such as spatial awareness and tactile recognition, contributing to a deeper understanding of brain function and sensory perception.
