A postboy was a messenger, typically a young man or boy, employed to carry mail and dispatches. Their role was particularly prominent in the era before the widespread development of postal services and advanced transportation. Postboys were responsible for physically transporting letters, documents, and other forms of communication between individuals or institutions over often considerable distances.

The duties of a postboy could include riding on horseback, walking, or sometimes traveling by coach depending on the available resources and the urgency of the message. They were entrusted with the security and timely delivery of the mail, and their services were essential for communication in both private and official capacities. In some instances, postboys were also responsible for collecting payments for postage or acting as a general courier.
