A possibilist is a person who adheres to possibilism, a doctrine or approach that emphasizes the role of possibility and human agency within given constraints. The term is used in different intellectual contexts, notably in geography and in philosophy.

In geography, possibilism is a school of thought that arose as a reaction against environmental determinism. Possibilists argue that the physical environment sets broad limits but does not dictate cultural outcomes. Human creativity, technology, and social organization enable a range of possible land uses and cultural adaptations. Thus, landscapes are shaped by choices within a matrix of constraints. The French geographer Paul Vidal de la Blache is associated with instituting the concept in early 20th-century geography, highlighting the capacity of peoples to adapt to diverse environments.

In philosophy, possibilism refers to positions about the nature of possibility and the reality of possible worlds. Some possibilists defend a form of modal realism or a commitment to the ontological status of possibilities, while others use the term more loosely to describe a cautious approach to contingency and future possibilities, allowing that many outcomes are open rather than fixed.
