A positive displacement system is a type of mechanical system that moves a fixed amount of fluid for each cycle of operation. This is achieved by trapping a specific volume of fluid and then forcing it through the system. Unlike dynamic displacement systems (such as centrifugal pumps) which rely on fluid velocity, positive displacement systems deliver a predictable and consistent flow rate, regardless of pressure changes.

Common examples of positive displacement systems include pumps and motors. Positive displacement pumps operate by creating a seal around a fixed volume of fluid, then expanding the cavity to draw in more fluid, and finally contracting the cavity to push the fluid out. This process is repeated continuously. Types of positive displacement pumps include gear pumps, piston pumps, diaphragm pumps, and screw pumps.

Positive displacement motors work on a similar principle but in reverse. Fluid under pressure enters the motor, causing a mechanism to rotate and produce mechanical work. The amount of rotation is directly proportional to the volume of fluid entering the motor. These motors are known for their high torque at low speeds and precise control.

The key advantage of positive displacement systems is their ability to provide a constant flow rate, making them ideal for applications requiring precise metering, high-pressure operation, or handling viscous fluids. They are widely used in industries such as hydraulics, lubrication, chemical processing, and fuel injection. However, they can be more susceptible to damage from blockages or over-pressurization compared to dynamic systems, often requiring pressure relief mechanisms.
