Pondkeeping is the practice of designing, installing, and maintaining garden ponds for aesthetics, wildlife, and sometimes food or hobby cultivation. It encompasses site selection, pond size and depth, water source, and the choice of construction method, such as a preformed liner or a flexible liner with edging. The goal is to create a stable aquatic habitat that balances visual appeal with ecological function.

A balanced pond contains plants, microorganisms, and animals that interact to maintain water quality. Plant groups include floating species (water lilies, water lettuce), submerged species (hornwort, eelgrass), and marginal plants (iris, reeds). Fish such as goldfish and koi are common in ornamental ponds, though many hobbyists also create ponds for native species or for wildlife encouragement. A habitat should provide shelter, food, and breeding opportunities, while minimizing predation and escape risk.

Key equipment includes a pond liner or natural basin, a pump to circulate water, filtration (mechanical and biological), and often an ultraviolet clarifier to control algae. Aeration devices, such as air pumps or fountain features, increase oxygen levels. Water quality is managed by regular testing and partial water changes, avoiding chlorine and chloramines, and ensuring appropriate pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Sediment and debris should be removed periodically.

Maintenance and seasonal care are important. Routine tasks include removing debris, cleaning filters, pruning plants, and monitoring fish health. In winter in temperate regions, ponds may be kept ice-free with aeration or a de-icer, or left partially frozen with wildlife considerations. In summer, shading to control algae, along with proper aeration, can stabilize temperature and oxygen.

Ethical and regulatory considerations include humane fish care, responsible stocking limits, and compliance with local wildlife and water regulations. Ponds can provide valuable habitat and educational opportunities while requiring ongoing observation and care.
