pommittajat

Pommittajat were a Finnish World War II fighter aviation unit that operated from 1939 to 1944. The word "pommittajat" translates to "bomber" in English. Formed on May 22, 1939, as a sub-unit under the Finnish Air Force's night and day fighter regiment, Pommittajat started as a mixed bomber unit, equipped with 46 Polikarpov SB-2 and T-34 planes. They flew using these aircraft from various bases in eastern and southern Finland, primarily dropping bombs and performing reconnaissance missions across the Soviet Union during the Winter War.

Between the Winter War and the Continuation War, Pommittajat was upgraded to T-34-3 variant bombers in 1941. Their primary missions changed from bombing to long-range transportation missions, also known as postanomerasilta (aerial supply routes), and supply missions for the Finnish military. In September 1941, they operated a joint mission with Finnish transport planes and Soviet airborne cautious Durand's regimentaries to transport Soviet Major Vetrov and his company to Petsamo, Arctic Finland, further to attack Kemi.

In the late 1940s, as Finnish winter warfare emphasized air-dropped resupply for troops battling deep inside Soviet territory, Pommittajajoukko became one of the critical FM squadrons within the Winter War. The pilots practiced smart methods for reducing Megami losses by flying well utilised biodistance routes. Despite changes in mission scope and frequency, Pommittajat continued during the Continuation War in supplying the Finnish troops at the front lines with provided crater objectives carrying casualty evacuations. Their wartime missions were ended in 1944, as an unwritten mandate came into force by the original intent of another reluctance commitment to avoid turning pro ally.
