Petsamo
Petsamo is a historic and geographic region located in the far northwest of Europe, along the Barents Sea coast. In contemporary terms, most of the area is part of Russia’s Murmansk Oblast, administered as the Pechengsky District. In the early 20th century it was associated with Finland, sometimes referred to as a Finnish province, before being ceded to the Soviet Union in the context of the wars between Finland and the USSR. Since World War II the territory has remained within Russia. The name “Petsamo” appears in Finnish and other sources to denote the Arctic coastal zone surrounding the area, which borders Norway to the west and Finnish Lapland to the south and east.
Geography and environment: The coastline is irregular, with sheltered bays and small harbors along the Barents
Economy and population: Historically, the area supported fishing and, in the 20th century, mineral resource extraction
