Polyunsaturates, more commonly known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), are a class of fatty acids that contain two or more double bonds in their hydrocarbon chain. Conversely, excessive consumption of omega‑6 polyunsaturates, relative to omega‑3s, has been associated with chronic inflammation and metabolic disorders. Balanced dietary intake and awareness of food sources remain key strategies for optimizing the benefits of polyunsaturates.

In biochemistry, the fluidity imparted by polyunsaturates is critical for membrane protein function, signal transduction, and the activity of lipid‑modified enzymes.
