Polyneuropathy is a medical condition affecting multiple peripheral nerves. Peripheral nerves are those outside of the brain and spinal cord, transmitting signals between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. When many of these nerves are damaged or diseased, it is termed polyneuropathy.

The symptoms of polyneuropathy can vary widely depending on which nerves are affected and the underlying cause. Common symptoms include numbness, tingling, burning sensations, and pain, often starting in the hands and feet. Muscle weakness, loss of coordination, and difficulty with balance can also occur. Some individuals may experience problems with digestion, bladder control, or blood pressure regulation. The onset can be gradual or sudden.

Numerous factors can lead to polyneuropathy. Diabetes is a leading cause, often referred to as diabetic neuropathy. Autoimmune diseases such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and lupus can also trigger nerve damage. Infections, exposure to toxins, certain medications, vitamin deficiencies, and inherited conditions are other potential causes. In some cases, the cause remains unknown, a condition known as idiopathic polyneuropathy.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, a physical and neurological examination, and potentially nerve conduction studies and electromyography (NCS/EMG) to assess nerve function. Blood tests may be conducted to identify underlying conditions like diabetes or vitamin deficiencies.

Treatment focuses on managing the underlying cause, if identifiable, and alleviating symptoms. This may include medications to control pain, improve nerve function, or suppress the immune system. Physical therapy can help maintain muscle strength and mobility. Lifestyle modifications, such as dietary changes and exercise, can also be beneficial.
