Polymerkunde is the interdisciplinary field that studies polymers—long chain molecules composed of repeating units—and their synthesis, structure, properties, processing, and applications. It spans chemistry, physics, materials science, and engineering and covers both synthetic polymers and natural polymers when treated as polymeric systems.

The scope includes polymerization mechanisms, molecular weight distribution, chain architecture (linear, branched, crosslinked), tacticity, and blends and composites. It also addresses polymer physics, rheology, and the relationship between microstructure and macroscopic properties such as strength, toughness, thermal stability, and permeability. Environmental and economic aspects, such as sustainability, recyclability, and life-cycle assessment, are increasingly integrated into the field.

Common methods and techniques involve polymerization processes (step-growth and chain-growth), catalysis, and living or controlled polymerization strategies. Characterization relies on techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, SAXS/WAXS, electron microscopy, and rheometry. Computational methods, including molecular dynamics and quantum chemistry, complement experiments and aid in property prediction and material design.

Historically, polymer science emerged in the early 20th century with the development of polymers such as polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene, followed by polyolefins like polyethylene and polypropylene. Advances in catalysis and polymer architecture, including Ziegler–Natta and living polymerization, expanded capabilities for material design and performance.

Applications span packaging, automotive parts, electronics, biomedical devices and materials, and consumer products. Ongoing research in polymerkunde also emphasizes sustainable polymers, biomass-based monomers, recycling, and strategies for a circular economy.
