Polymerizací (polymerization) is a chemical process in which small molecules called monomers are chemically bonded to form larger, complex molecules known as polymers. This process is fundamental in the production of a wide range of materials, including plastics, rubbers, fibers, and resins. Polymerization can be categorized into two main types: addition (chain-growth) polymerization and condensation (step-growth) polymerization.

Addition polymerization involves the successive addition of monomers with unsaturated bonds, typically alkenes, to a growing polymer chain. This process usually requires an initiator to generate reactive species, facilitating the formation of free radicals, cations, or anions, which propagate the chain reaction. Common examples include the production of polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, involves the repeated condensation reactions between monomers containing multiple reactive groups, with the release of small molecules such as water or methanol. This type of polymerization is characteristic of polyesters, nylons, and polyurethanes.
