Polyester padding, also called polyester wadding or polyester fiberfill in some markets, is a synthetic padding material made from polyester fibers. It is widely used to provide insulation and cushioning in textiles and soft goods. The material is typically produced from polyester staple fibers that are carded, formed into a batt, and often thermally bonded or needle-punched to maintain structure. Some versions use recycled PET as a feedstock, expanding the sustainability options within the product category.

Common applications include quilts and comforters, pillows, lightweight jackets, sleeping bags, upholstery padding, and craft stuffing. Polyester padding can be manufactured in various lofts and thicknesses to balance warmth, softness, and compressibility. It is generally lightweight, resistant to moisture and quick-drying, and tends to be inexpensive compared with natural fillings.

Polyester padding is typically machine washable and dryable. To maintain loft, use low heat when drying; avoid high heat as it can degrade fibers. It holds shape well with regular use, but over time the loft may degrade or clump in areas if not evenly distributed.

Pros and cons: Pros include affordability, easy care, good warmth-to-weight ratio, and hypoallergenic properties. Cons include not as breathable as some natural fillings, potential fiber shedding, and an environmental footprint from petroleum-based feedstock; recycling options exist but end-of-life handling varies by product.

Environmental and sustainability: Some padding is made from recycled post-consumer PET bottles. Recycling streams for polyester padding exist but are less established than for cotton or wool, and disposal considerations include landfilling or energy recovery.
