Polyestertyper is a term used to describe a family of polymers known as polyesters. These materials are formed by condensation polymerization between diols and dicarboxylic acids (or by transesterification of dimethyl esters) to yield repeating ester linkages. Polymers in this family are used in a broad range of applications, including textile fibers, bottles and films, resins, and coatings.

The most common polyester is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), used for beverage bottles and synthetic fibers. Other important types include polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), which offers good dimensional stability and heat resistance, and glycol-modified forms such as PETG. There are also high-temperature or semi-crystalline polyesters such as polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) and polyethylene naphthalate (PEN). Unsaturated polyesters (UP) form a separate subclass used as resins in fiberglass-reinforced composites and are cured with styrene.

Properties of polyesteryper vary by grade but generally include high strength and stiffness, good chemical resistance, and good abrasion resistance. They are relatively dimensionally stable, though some grades absorb moisture which can affect properties. Crystallinity and molecular structure influence transparency, stiffness, and barrier properties. PET is notable for clarity and gas barrier properties; PBT is valued for molded parts and electrical components.

Production and processing: PET is produced by esterification of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol or transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol, followed by polycondensation to high molecular weight polymer. PET fibers are melt-spun; bottle-grade PET requires crystallization and orientation. PBT and related polyesters are prepared similarly from diols and diacids and processed by extrusion, injection molding, or resin casting. Recycling is common for PET, using mechanical or chemical methods; other polyesters are recycled to varying degrees depending on economics and technology.

Environmental considerations: Polyesters are not readily biodegradable; recycling and energy recovery help reduce impact. Ongoing research seeks more recyclable, bio-based, and lower-impact variants.
