Polyacrylonitrile, often abbreviated as PAN, is a synthetic organic polymer with the formula (C3H3N)n. It is a thermoplastic polymer that is characterized by its strong chemical stability and high tensile strength. PAN is primarily produced through the free-radical polymerization of acrylonitrile monomer.

The most significant application of polyacrylonitrile is as a precursor for carbon fiber production. When PAN is heated to high temperatures in the absence of air, it undergoes a process called cyclization and then carbonization, resulting in a material with a very high carbon content and exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. This carbon fiber is widely used in aerospace, automotive, sporting goods, and other industries where high performance is critical.

Beyond its role in carbon fiber, polyacrylonitrile is also used in the production of acrylic fibers. These fibers are known for their softness, warmth, and resistance to sunlight and chemicals, making them suitable for textiles such as clothing, carpets, and upholstery. PAN can also be found in membranes for water purification and in certain adhesives. Its versatility stems from its robust chemical structure and the ability to modify its properties through various processing techniques.
